About Me

Hello and welcome to The Happy Haandi!

In case you’re interested, this page is meant to tell you more about me! I also hope it provides some information on what The Happy Haand is about and how it came to be.

That’s me! Anju, the person behind The Happy Haandi.

Who am I?

My name is Anju and I am the author and creator of The Happy Haandi (“Haandi” in my family’s language means “cooking vessel”).  I come from an Indian background and can easily say that I’ve been accustom to Indian food for literally my whole life of eating solid food.

My Background

My family originally comes from a relatively small town in south India called Madurai.  Despite my disinterest in visiting when I was younger (it’s really hot, I didn’t speak a well known language, and I was the essence of an annoyed 16 year old girl).  The one thing that has been the best part of any of those trips was the food.  Unique, spicy, FLAVORFUL – just something about it is not captured anywhere else for me.  And I know, I know you might say, “but Anju, it’s the food you grew up with, OF COURSE you’d be in love with it.”  And to that I say, “…yeah probably.” But in the last few years I have been feeding these dishes to my unsuspecting, guinea pig friends and have seen nothing but happy faces.

Purpose

When I originally set out to create this blog, it was supposed to be a place where I could catalogue all of these unique Indian recipes. But, as I got more and more imaginative in my own kitchen, I realized I wanted the space to not only show off these recipes but my own too! So – the purpose of my blog rises! I’m here to show lots of the recipes I have created and use at home and then once a month or so, catalogue a good ole’ fashion Indian recipe from my Mom’s repertoire/my childhood. They will feature her version of the dish, along with my notes on technique and what I thought worked well.

I hope you enjoy and maybe even give these recipes a whirl!
